I like this.

It's got a lot of neat experimental aspects to it, but it's not quite IDM. It's just something original in breakcore, which is a feat in its self. My only complaint is that maybe a dirtier bass would of sounded better, more of a personal preference though. It's good stuff, man. Keep experimenting.

Thanks ;D

Silly yet funky.

This is immensely groovy. It doesn't seem real serious so I'll spare you the intense critique. I think you should invest in a turntable though, you'd have fun. :D

Take my muffins!

Here! Take 'em! Obviously you need them more than I do.

Rig responds:

RAAAAAARRRRGH om nom nom :3

Is that you playing the keys?

The keyboard is amazing in this. I love groovy little melodies like that. If it's you playing then you've got a lot of talent. Even if it's not you playing, it's an excellent composition. I'd have given this a 10 if the bass drum weren't so blaring, trying putting it farther back in the mix, or at the very least just quieting it a bit. Overall, this is a really good track.

Shan83 responds:

thank you, john :)
yes, the keyboard is me, I'm addicted to rhodes/electric piano
actually I wanted to change bass drum at that time, but I couldn't find a good alternative, and I just wanted to finish the track...I'm very impulsive unfortunately. but again, you are right ;)

I wish my sink sounded this funky.

This sounds reaally professional. I've only got two complaints though. It's entirely too short(not really a legitimate complaint) and the bass line just doesn't seem to fit very well. I don't have any actual advice, but that's my $0.02

5/5

Shan83 responds:

Hi John :)
Thank you for your advice, now listening again to this, I think you are right about the bassline.. mhhh yes.
but again, thank you for your review..and glad you liked it ;)

Groove indeed.

The melody here is immense, especially in the very beginning. I was expecting a lot more after the first 25 seconds or so. You started out with this really funky epic little tune and then it just thinned out. In my opinion this would be amazing if it were just more built up. Aside from a neat melody and an alright(functional) drum beat there just isn't enough here.

Hmmm...

There's like 4 or 5 different songs in here. You switch it up COMPLETELY every 20 seconds or so. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it makes a tough time for actually listening to the song.

Here's my advice: Take each different 'section' and break 'em up into their own songs and elaborate on what you have there. As far as I can see nothing here is actually BAD, in fact I really like a lot of the ideas you present, but there's not enough here of each piece or one coherent piece to really enjoy.

Smiles and whatnot.

This is very good. You should invest in a real keyboard or some software and a midi keyboard. Because your playing is very good but the keyboard just sounds shoddy. Dynamics are an issue but that can't really be helped so much until you get a better rig. For such a busy piece, I thought the really quiet calm bits felt odd. The main phrase you go keep returning to is really nice though so well done.

Lpauley responds:

This is a real keyboard, and i'm quite sure it's a good one, the mp3 conversion really messed with the flow and dynamics,
the main problem is the recording. there is a recording process on the keyboard, but it changes the originial .usr file to a .smf (essentially .midi) which really messes with the quality.

Im sure if i played the song through music software and save it as a .wav (such as ronald jenkees method), it would sound much more crisp and clear, but alas, i don't have any music software on me.

thanks for the review :]

Good.

Regardless of quality we need more REAL instrumental work being posted to NG. So keep it up :) I think if you cleaned up the recording quality(obviously) and added some chords and vocals you might have a hit =P As for adding chords, don't go looking for chords that fit in the key you're playing or whatever. Try and build chords around the notes as you're playing them, and then experiment with some finger picking or weird strumming patterns. At least that's how I approach things like this.

MonkeyV responds:

Thanks! I'll try all that with my next song, just not the vocals. I am no singer or lyric writer.

Sweet.

The first 6 seconds of this are epic. Who cares if it's default FL stuff? It's still been rearranged and recomposed and sounds neat.
